Francis Alys has lived and worked in Mexico City since 1987. Between 1978 and 1983, Alys studied architecture at the Institut dArchitecture de Tournai, before going on to undertake postgraduate studies at the Instituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia from 1983 to 1986. Alys has worked in the fine arts field since the beginning of the 1990s. Alys has been the subject of a number of international exhibitions since the mid-1990s, most recently Seven Walks, Artangel at 21 Portman Square/ National Portrait Gallery, London; The Green Line, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Walking Distance from the Studio in the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg and MACBA, Barcelona; Obra Pictorica, coproduced by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, the Kunsthaus, Zurich, and the Centro nazionale per le arti contemporani, Rome; Modern Procession, Museum of Modern Art, New York.
